Someone Saying Something Smart About the Kindle

So this guy articulates some things that I’ve been thinking but unable to say. The funny thing about the whole digital book thing is that the technology is meant to make things more convenient, but books are pretty convenient.  I mean, how many books do you really need on vacation?  2? is it really worth paying $200 plus $9.99 so you only have to carry something equal to one?  Plus a charger?  and make sure it doesn’t get wet? And oh – keep a look out on it because someone might steal it?  No one is going to steal your freaking paperback book.

I don’t know.  I might just be an e-book hater because I like regular books, but I also sort of think that e-books are technological innovation for the book like McDonald’s is technological innovation for the burger.  Yes, they might be slightly more convenient to acquire, but is it really worth giving up taste, quality, and nutritional value?

Good Times?

Random House says that they have doubled their operating income before taxes for the first half of this year. They attribute the rise to lots of best sellers and a whole bunch of e-book sales.

I read a review of this guys book who lived for a year without any money.  It was a cool concept.  I want to read it.  I’m sure he probably covers this some, but it seems like it would be hard but doable to do that as a single young man, but would it be possible with a family?  The review is worth a read.

Barnes and Noble is closing a NYC store in Lincoln Center – its a store thats been open since 1995.  I’m thinking maybe this is a first sign of times to come.

Words

This is a beautiful, thoughtful, inspiring video that was made in conjunction with my favorite radio show, Radiolab.  Watch it.  And when you figure it out, start over.

Made by Will Hoffman and Daniel Mercadante. With an original score by Keith Kenniff.
